When you need to dig cannes in the fall and how to store them correctly in winter: timing and methods

As you know, cannes are tropical plants (common in Central and South America), which means that they can be successfully grown only as an annual crop, similar to dahlias, in other words, digging cannes rhizomes for the winter is one of the mandatory measures for the correct cultivation of these colors.

Next, you will learn when and how to dig up cannes correctly, as well as in what conditions to store the rhizome tubers until a new one spring planting in the ground.

When to dig cannes: timing

Cannes digging begins after how the first night frosts will pass (-1 ..- 2) and the foliage will freeze, i.e. around October (relevant for the Central strip and the Moscow region).

However, if the frosts promise strong (up to -5 degrees), then it is certainly better to dig up the cannes earlier.

Nuance! Often, the rhizomes of cannes do not have time to ripen in the conditions of the Middle Belt and even more so in the North-West (Leningrad Region), the Urals or Siberia, therefore, even before the onset of frost, they are dug out together with a lump of earth and transferred to "ripening" in a greenhouse.

The fact is that the tubers must stock up on food before the dormant period, and in the conditions of a short and cool summer, they sometimes do not have enough time for this (more precisely, heat, namely the sum of active temperatures).

How to dig up cannes

As we have already found out, every autumn cannes rhizomes must be dug up. How can this be done correctly?

So, you should choose a dry and sunny day, carefully dig in the bush from all sides and get it from together with a lump of earth... Then you just have to remove the aboveground part (leaving 10-20 centimeters) and you can put it away for storage.

By the way! You can trim the stems before digging.

Interesting! Some gardeners recommend to additionally clean the rhizomes from the ground (you can even rinse with water), cut off small roots and rotten parts, cover the sections with brilliant green or crushed coal, process (pickle) in fungicide, dry well and only then put them away for storage.

Why cleanse the earth? The fact is that the ground can be a source of infection, which means that your rhizomes can be affected by some kind of disease (they can rot) during storage.

Where and how to store cannes in winter

It is necessary to store the rhizomes in a cool room (in the same basement), where the minimum positive temperature is kept (optimally - +4 degrees, but it can be higher, up to +8 .. + 12 degrees).

It is believed that dahlia tubers are best stored in a cooler placethan cannes... Therefore, in principle, it is suitable for storage vestibule, pantry or insulated balcony (loggia).

Note! The main thing is that the temperature does not fall below zero.

Because canna tubers-rhizomes dry out very much (begin to wither), it is better to store them in the ground or some kind of substrate. That is why, when digging, it is advisable to preserve an earthen lump (that is, not to clean it).

Important! The earth ball will only stick well if you have sufficient clay soil (loam). If the soil is sandy, then, most likely, the earth will simply crumble.

Alternatively, you can put the rhizomes in a box, box or pot (any container), and then sprinkle with peat soil.

Better to sprinkle sand or sawdust.

By the way! If you have no cellar or basement, then the rhizomes should be wrapped in newspaper (in 3-4 layers) or sprinkled with sawdust, put in a perforated bag and remove in the refrigerator.

Better yet, use for storage sphagnum moss.

It should be borne in mind that during winter storage additional watering (moistening) of the cannes rhizomes is not necessary, otherwise you can provoke too early awakening of the buds and germination of shoots.

When to get cannes after winter storage for germination

Advice! The site already has an article about when to start germinating cannes at home in a pot and how to plant them in open ground.

Well, now you know the terms of digging and the rules for storing cannes in winter. Good luck!

Note! The author of the video in the most concise and clear form shows and describes the whole process, however, at the end he says that “cannes can be watered a couple of times during the winter«, what not to do.
