How to dig up and store mirabilis in winter: terms and rules for digging, tips for storing night beauty tubers in winter

Probably this year you sowed and raised mirabilis from seeds... Autumn has come, and you somewhere or from someone heard that a night beauty can be made a perennial. Namely, you need to dig out its tubers-rhizomes in order to preserve them in the winter and plant them again in open ground next spring.

Next, you will learn about when it is better and how you can dig out the rhizomes of mirabilis, properly prepare for storage and save in winter until a new spring planting.

Why bother with digging and storing rhizomes?

Tuber bushes will be more powerful, which means that flowering will improve (+ earlier) than when planting seeds.

When to dig out the rhizomes of mirabilis in the fall (for the winter)

It is believed that digging the roots of mirabilis is necessary with the onset of the first frost, i.e. at the same time with dahlias.

However! Some growers advise to dig out mirabilis in advance (at night temperatures of about +1 .. + 4 degrees).

As for the approximate dates, depending on the region, this may fall on the beginning of October-November.

How to dig mirabilis and put it in storage correctly

Step-by-step instruction:

  • Cut off the aerial part (tops) so that it is convenient to dig up the tubers.
  • Gently dig in with a shovel (to the depth of a bayonet), stepping back 5-8 cm from the plant, so as not to hurt the tubers growing towards the side.
  • Reach carefully.

  • Wash thoroughly from the ground and pickle in a solution of one of the fungicides (for example, "Maxim" or copper sulfate (1-% solution).

Think! Some gardeners do not cleanse the soil and do not pickle carrot tubers, but only dry them and immediately put them away for storage.

  • Cut off all the roots, and then treat the places of cuts with brilliant green or crushed coal.
  • Dry thoroughly and store.

Wet tubers should not be stored in any case.

How to store mirabilis in winter

You can store the roots (tubers) of mirabilis exactly the same as dahlias (even in one container). For example, in a cellar or basement, pouring peat, sawdust or sand.

Some even keep rhizomes in a cardboard box, without sprinkling, but only dropping into the basement or cellar.

And there are those who store tubers by simply wrapping them with wrapping paper at home (in an apartment) under the closet or near the balcony door.

However! The roots of mirabilis dry out very easily, so it is better not to take risks and still pour them with something, and then put them in a relatively cool place (not necessarily a cellar or basement).

In general, it will do fridge, only it is advisable to wrap the tubers first to the newspaper and only then in a perforated bag.

Interesting! In the Krasnodar Territory (in the Kuban), mirabilis reproduces well by self-sowing, but in the Central Lane (Moscow Region), the seeds freeze or soak over the winter.

Well, if you didn't know before that mirabilis can be grown not only from seeds, now you can try to save tubers and look at the result of their spring planting in order to decide for yourself whether it makes sense to bother with digging and storing, or still every year sow with seeds.
